  • Ecodriving

    What is Eco driving?

It means to think and drive ecologically. It is a clever way of driving which contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption, emission of gases and pollutants that cause the greenhouse effect. It also contributes to the decrease of road accidents. In addition it means wise, mild and safe driving at low RPM (revolutions per minute) which can improve fuel economy up to 15%.

    The objectives of Eco driving.

    Eco drivers must:

    • Protect the environment
    • Save natural resources
    • Not pay expensive fuel
    • Not have health problems caused by fumes
    • Be involved in car accidents

    Eco driving strategies

    1. Drive at lower speed whenever possible.

If your car has a cruise control device use it while driving in motorways so that you can maintain a steady speed. Remember that wind resistance quickly increases at greater speed. The energy required when the vehicle slows down and accelerates or starts and stops is much more than when it maintains a constant speed.

    1. Reduce driving which includes a lot of stop and go as much as possible.

The cycle of fuel consumption is always increased in a city compared to the motorway due to the constant need to stop and go when driving in a city. Abrupt acceleration dramatically increases fuel consumption and stopping or braking wastes the energy which was used to move your car.

    1. Change gear at the right time.

Driving at a low gear causes the engine to use more fuel.

    1. Use the air condition only when it is absolutely necessary.

Using the air condition increases consumption by up to 10% However at speeds greater than 80km/h limited use of the air condition may result in lower fuel consumption compared to an open window which will increase the vehicle’s wind resistance.

    1. Do not warm up your car before starting.

    Warming-up your car wastes fuel.

    1. Check tyre pressure.

Low tyre pressure increases rolling resistance and as a result fuel consumption goes up. Align your tyres. If you take care of your tyres they will last longer, you will have better control of your car and decrease fuel consumption.

    1. Remove excess weight from your car.

Extra weight increases energy consumption. It leads to a dramatic rise of wind resistance and in some cases fuel consumption may go up by more than 20%.

    1. Have your vehicle serviced regularly.

Have your vehicle properly maintained and in good condition so as to ensure that emissions of pollutants and consumption are low.

    1. Select the right vehicle based on the cubic capacity which is the most suitable for you and fuel consumption.
    2. Avoid using your vehicle for short distances or when you can use public transport instead.
      1. Share car journeys with others whenever possible

o   Share car journeys to work with your colleagues

o   Share car journeys with your friends during outings.

    1. Walk
    2. Cycle
    3. Take the bus.
    1. Shift to higher gear at approximately 2.000-2. 500 RPM
    2. Turn your engine off for stops longer than one minute.
    3. Plan the shortest possible route to your destination.
    4. Choose the best route
      1. Find the most economical route for your journeys.
      2. You must choose the route based on distance and traffic congestion.
